Work in Progress

Continuing the theme of “Getting Nervous”, this is the first in a series of paintings based on Purkinje cells in the brain. These paintings are larger, 24 x 18” canvas, and will be more abstracted than the small studies I did previously.

I want to bring out more of the landscape quality I see in slides of cells. They are a foreign landscape, yet these millions of cells make up who we are.

This is a series called “Getting Nervous”, inspired by my histology textbook from med school. When I received my schedule for the first quarter of school, I had no idea what histology was (it is the study of cells for those of you who also don’t know the term). Looking through the microscope was a peek into another world, except it was the world that makes up my body. i loved the pictures and had the feeling they would inspire artwork. So many of the slides reminded me of landscapes or stars and other heavenly bodies.

My intention is not to simply replicate the pictures in the book, but to let them develop into their own identity and story. I’m already itching to make larger, more abstract versions of these little studies.

Each piece is a 4 x 4” wood panel, with acrylic paint and graphite.
