About
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work weaves together ideas of memory, the challenge of communication in spoken and written words, physiology and medicine, and the universal human quest of understanding our place in this often confusing world. I use a variety of media to create layers and texture to portray these themes.
Layering and working back into the surface are a metaphor for all that happens in our bodies and lives below the surface; things we don’t know or aren’t aware that are happening day in and day out. We often can’t, won’t, or aren’t able to see these depths in ourselves and others. Science and art are stereotypically considered opposites, yet I found so many parallels during my education in science and medicine.
I juxtapose my interpretation of the seen and unseen struggles and experiences with moments of beauty, a place to rest the eyes for a few moments before carrying on with our busy lives.
BIO
Anne Thiel is an artist working in Goshen, Indiana.
She grew up in Cincinnati, OH and developed an interest in making art as a teenager. She pursued a BFA at the University of Cincinnati, with an emphasis in painting. During her third year of college, she spent a semester in the south of France at the Lacoste School of the Arts and the beautiful Provençal landscape influenced her paintings. She was commissioned by several private individuals to do small scale murals and participated in multiple group shows in venues around Cincinnati while in college.
After college, the culture and novelty of Portland, OR beckoned her and became home for almost 13 years. During this time, a career shift to medicine happened. She graduated with honors in research from the National University of Natural Medicine, followed by a residency in integrative oncology at the Goshen Center for Cancer Care.
After several variations of a career in medicine, Anne returned to making art as a means to unify all the interests in her life. Facets of science and medicine appear in some of her recent works and will continue to be a strong influence.
